Gold And Silver Collecting

Caleb Jordan

There almost as many hobbies in the world as there are types of people, ranging from arts and crafts to automotive and traveling. Some people spend a lot of time and money on their hobbies while others take it easy. One hobby that has been around a number of years is the collecting of precious metals. In particular, silver and/or gold collecting is popular. Sometimes people collect one or the other and sometimes people are interested in both. There are various sources of gold and silver, but the main ones are coins and jewelry.

Gold and Silver Coins

Many people enjoy coin collecting as a hobby. There are antique stores, independent sellers, and even some modern businesses that sell rare or old coins, and it may be possible to find some silver or gold that way. Talking to and making deals with other metal collectors is a great way to get a hold of coins. Some people search for old coins on old property, beaches, and places where old coins might have been dropped and buried. Sometimes you stumble upon rare coins by chance. Occasionally they might get mixed in with modern change. How coins are collected is up to the individual. There also books or guides on the subject that may help newcomers to the hobby.

Gold and Silver Jewelry

The second main source of gold and silver for those interested in collecting is jewelry. Earrings, bracelets, necklaces, brooches, watches, and pins may contain some gold or silver elements. Dealing with individual sellers, like with coins, is one way to go. Sometimes you can find gold or silver at estate sales where the items of a deceased person are up for auction. Browsing flea markets, thrift stores, antique shops, used jewelry stores, and small local jewelers may help you find the jewelry you seek. You can also find such items on platforms like Craig's List, online bidding stores, or local trading posts.

Uses for Collections

For some people, gold and silver collecting is its own reward. They may keep their collections their whole lives and arrange to have them passed on to someone else in their family after death. A person's collection may have historical or cultural value. Other people will try to sell or trade with their silver or gold items, either to get a hold of other rare collectibles, or to earn money. Coin collecting is an investment for some people, who will wait and sell their collections at a time when the value for the coins is high. There are many silver and gold buyers who accept almost any form of gold or silver from individuals. Wholesale gold and silver buyers are great to go to if you're looking to make money off your collection.
